Herne Bay 2s vs Holcombe
The boys in blue had a 3.30 game in Rochester, with a crowd on the balcony the team arrived looking to build on the very positive performance from the week before. The message was simple, let's not conceded in the first 5 minutes. The first half was an edgy encounter with the oppo having a lot of the ball and moving the Bay team about, however, the boys in blue kept their shape and discipline and frustrating the oppo, with the Bay keeper called into a few saves. The blues did offer threats going forward but could not find the breakthrough. At half time the score was 0-0 for the second week in a row.
Half time chat consisted of let's try to get wider, keep our shape and win some corners. (Apparently, the oppo were overheard slating and questioning our goalkeeper's ability).
The second half started nervy for Bay and Holcombe came again and started putting pressure again on the Bay defence, but every man in blue stood up and put their body on the line, with many tackles and diving for loose balls to stop the oppo scoring. Right out of the training ground the Bay took the lead after an assist from the captain allowed Sam Thompson to score the Bay's first goal of the season and a precious lead. This galvanised the boys in blue and more solid defending and tackles were required as the oppo turned the screw. Holcs thought they had equalised with a fantastic LBZ effort arrowing towards the far corner but credit to Wiggy, a big left toe turned the ball wide, cheers from the crowd on the balcony and even congratulations from the oppo followed. Holcs did eventually find a goal managing to score a tap in at the back post. Neither team wanted to settle for a draw and the Bay should have scored but Adam Foster could only manage to smash his rebound over the crossbar. Holcs did score again after a 4 v1 counter-attack but the Holcs forward decided to kick it before scoring. The final whistle blew and the Bay had a hard-earned point that lifted them several places up the table.
Every blue player looked absolutely dead on their feet and put in absolutely everything to gain a hard-earned point.
Mom - Wiggy, but could easily have gone to anyone for the work rate and effort.
DOD - NO ONE
